Exceptions would be made for Australian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate families, as well as air crews who have been using appropriate personal protective equipment.

A man in his 20s who returned to the USA from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, has contracted the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention alerted health officials in Boston on Saturday.

British health officials on Friday confirmed the first cases in the United Kingdom, after two members of the same family tested positive for the virus. A total of 224 people in Wuhan have now died from the virus, for which there is no vaccine.

The two-week quarantine of the 195 Americans at March Air Reserve Base, near Los Angeles, runs from the time the evacuees left China on Tuesday.

Indonesia also sent a plane, sparking rowdy protests from residents living near a military base that will house evacuees.

The Chinese data would suggest it is less deadly than the 2002-03 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed almost 800 people of the some 8,000 it infected, although such numbers can evolve rapidly.

All the new deaths were in central Hubei province, the epicentre of the flu-like coronavirus outbreak.

Although scientists expect to see limited transmission of the virus between people with family or other close contact, they are concerned about cases of infection spreading to people who might have less exposure.

That declaration "flipped the switch" from a cautious attitude to recommending governments prepare for the possibility the virus might spread, said the World Health Organization representative in Beijing, Gauden Galea.

Most cases reported so far have been people who visited China or their family members.

Adding to concerns over combatting the contagion, Thai health officials yesterday said a taxi driver became the kingdom's first case of human-to-human transmission.

A single strain of DNA is the main ingredient in this vaccine which they hope will trigger a strong response against the virus. The final time a comparable virus - Sars - emerged in 2002 - China was sluggish to let the world know what was occurring.

The World Health Organization, which this week declared the outbreak a public health emergency of worldwide concern, has said global trade and travel restrictions are not needed.

Americans returning from China will be allowed into the country, but will face screening and are required to undertake 14 days of self-screening. Every returnee will be put into a 14-day quarantine to rule out the deadly infection.

Passengers arrive at Heathrow Airport in London after the last British Airways flight from China touched down in the UK. India, South Korea, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia have all said they are preparing to send evacuation flights to Wuhan and other cities, while EU-chartered jets have already arrived in China to pick up 350 Europeans.

Meanwhile, all commercial flights from China would be restricted to global US airports in one of seven cities - New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Honolulu.

The U.S. State Department warned Americans on Thursday not to travel to China because of the epidemic.

Japan and Germany also advised against non-essential travel to China and Britain did as well, except for Hong Kong and Macao.

USA health officials on Saturday confirmed an eighth case of the virus, a person in MA who recently returned from Hubei province. "Certainly not a gesture of goodwill", said foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.

WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva that despite the emergency declaration, there is "no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with global travel and trade".

Meanwhile, six officials in the city of Huanggang, neighbouring the epicenter of Wuhan in Hubei province, have been fired over "poor performance" in handling the outbreak, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

"Others are not allowed to go out except for medical treatment, to do epidemic prevention and control work or to work in supermarkets and pharmacies", it said in an announcement.
