Defying expectations of a rise, global carbon dioxide emissions flatlined in 2019

Back in 2019, the global energy-linked carbon dioxide emissions paused significantly, according to the International Energy Agency's recent report.

A new report stated the U.S.is leading the world in reducing carbon emissions, while also seeing economic growth.

In 2019, drops in emissions in advanced economies were largely the result of shifts in the energy sector, with expanding use of renewable energies like wind and solar, which don't emit greenhouse gases.

In what is sure to be a surprise to those who vilify the United States as a major climate polluter, the USA led the entire world in reducing carbon dioxide emissions previous year, according to a recent worldwide report. Natural gas produced more electricity than coal for the first time ever, meanwhile wind-powered electricity almost caught up with coal-fired electricity. Other factors included milder weather in several countries, and slower economic growth in some emerging markets, the IEA said. It also noted that over the last 20 years, USA emissions have decreased almost one gigaton (1 billion metric tons). "The United States has reduced all types of emissions, even as we grow our economy and ensure our citizens' access to affordable energy".

Global power sector emissions declined by some 170 Mt, or 1.2%, with the biggest falls taking place in advanced economies where Carbon dioxide emissions are now at levels not seen since the late 1980s (when electricity demand was one-third lower). The strengthened commitment builds on the company's strong history of environmental stewardship, while acknowledging the need to further reduce emissions consistent with the findings of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Dominion had previously committed to cutting methane emissions from its natural gas operations by 50% between 2010 and 2030 and carbon emissions from its power generating facilities by 80% between 2005 and 2050.

Pompeo articulated that the USA would move forward with efforts to curb emissions while also growing the economy, a promise that the administration appears to have kept in 2019, with the economy growing 2.3% over the year.

The European Union saw its emissions fall by 5 percent to 2.9 gigatons, while Japan's dropped 4.3 percent to just over 1 gigaton in 2019.

"A significant decrease in emissions in advanced economies in 2019 offset continued growth elsewhere", the IEA noted in a press release.

However, energy-related emissions across the rest of the world continued to grow, rising by nearly 400 million tonnes in 2019, with nearly 80 per cent of that increase taking place in Asia where coal-fired power generation rose yet again, according to the IEA.

The immediate aim will be to focus on concrete actions to reverse the growth in carbon emissions this decade, focusing on all the fuels and existing technologies that can help achieve that goal in a hurry.
