The new mechanism through the Swiss government will focus on facilitating commercial USA exports of agricultural commodities, food, medicine and medical devices to Iran.

"We will closely monitor all developments in Iran's nuclear program and Secretary (Mike) Pompeo can end these projects as developments warrant", Brian Hook, US special representative for Iran, told a news briefing.

The decision to sanction Salehi and the AEOI would have an impact on Iran's civilian nuclear program because it has operational control over the program, including purchasing parts for nuclear facilities.

"We have created a very high standard of due diligence, but we have now already had one company that has met that", he said, adding that there were likely to be more similar transactions.

The video conference around January 8, first reported by the Washington Post, was led on the USA side by David Hale, the undersecretary for political affairs at the State Department, while the Europeans on the call were ambassadors, one of the officials said. "There will be more to come".

Trump began re-imposing sanctions on Iran's vital oil exports after he unilaterally pulled the United States from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.

Brian Hook, the U.S. point man on Iran, said that the United States would for another 60 days issue exemptions in its sweeping sanctions to let Russian and other companies implement it without fear of punishment by Washington. He accused Washington of waging "economic terrorism against the Iranian people".

It's also reversible, meaning a user is less likely to damage a device by trying to jam in the connector the wrong way. What could it mean for Canadians? Only the iPhone and some related accessories still rely on the lighting connector.

The United States also renewed four nuclear restrictions on Iran for an additional 60 days. "Providing a Resources Transfer Mechanism and financing it is an important criterion for assessing the validity of their (US) claim".

"Iranian cancer and transplant patients are receiving treatments through this channel, which is subject to strict due diligence measures to avoid misuse by the Iranian regime", the Treasury Department said in a statement.

The humanitarian channel is operated by the Swiss government, which has served as a mediator between Tehran and Washington in the past.

"Our maximum pressure campaign continues as before; we will sanction any sanctionable activity".

The State Department team was struck by the firmness of the European line and passed their message on to the White House and officials from both sides noted the the USA administration dialed back the pressure on its European allies in the days that followed. Bern will verify the information and share it with the US Treasury.

Iran has hit back with countermeasures in response to the USA withdrawal from the deal, which gave it the promise of relief from sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear programme.
