Japan Tourist Shows Coronavirus Symptoms While On Hawaii Vacation

Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense issued an updated COVID-19 information message on Friday, announcing that someone who visited the State of Hawaiʻi in January and February has come down with the coronavirus since returning to Japan.

The greatest immediate focus is to identify and track down individuals who had "prolonged, face-to-face contacts" with the Japanese man after he began showing symptoms on Oahu, said Dr Sarah Park, the state's chief epidemiologist.

Health Director Bruce Anderson says officials believe that someone who doesn't have symptoms probably can not transmit the virus.

The man was in Hawaii Jan. 28 to February 7. He first visited the island of Maui, where he had no symptoms, Anderson said. He was on Oahu, the state's most populated island, February 3-7. While on Oahu, he had cold-like symptoms, but no fever, Anderson said.

Once back in Japan, he became more seriously ill and was tested for the coronavirus after going to a hospital, Anderson said.

Based on that date, Japan officials think the man was infected while in Japan or in transit to Hawaii.

He is from Japan's Aichi Prefecture. The incubation period is believed to run between 2 and 14 days.

While on Oahu, the tourist stayed at the Hilton Grand Hilton.

Japan has about 250 confirmed cases of the new disease that apparently started in Wuhan, a city in central China, in December.

Beyond China, almost 450 cases have been tallied in some 24 countries and territories, and three deaths. All but two of the cases were in people who had traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the worldwide outbreak.

Japan confirmed its first coronavirus death on Thursday.
