Justice Department won't charge ex-FBI agent and Trump target Andrew McCabe

The Justice Department said Friday it will not pursue criminal charges against former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, after a almost two-year-long investigation into accusations brought by the agency's independent watchdog who claimed that he lacked "candor" when questioned about leaking to the media.

McCabe was sacked from the Federal Bureau of Investigation on March 16, 2018, after the Justice Department's inspector general concluded that McCabe misled investigators looking into how Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials handled matters associated with the 2016 presidential election.

McCabe's lawyers said in a statement they were told in a phone call and letter that the case is closed and "no charges will be brought against him based on the facts".

President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr walk out of the Oval Office to announce an executive action to tally American citizenship, in the White House Rose Garden in Washington, on July 11, 2019. The New York Times first reported Jensen's involvement.

McCabe, a frequent target of Trump's attacks, has denied that he intentionally misled anyone.

The Justice Department's inspector general forwarded the findings for prosecutors, but the months went by with no criminal charges.

Florida State will host Jacksonville State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla., on September 11, 2021. Florida State is one of many Power 5 non-conference programs scheduled to play LSU in the coming years.

"We said at the outset of the criminal investigation nearly two years ago that if the facts and the law determined the result, no charges would be brought", McCabe's lawyers said after Friday's decision, according to The Times. McCabe said Barr's recent interventions into Justice Department cases related to Trump were a continuation of the politicization of the department that began with the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

"At long last, justice has been done in this matter", McCabe's lawyers, Michael Bromwich and David Schertler, said in a statement.

Four Justice Department prosecutors recently resigned from their case after the department made a similar change to the sentencing recommendation for Roger Stone, another associate of President Donald Trump, who has not said whether he would pardon Flynn or Stone.

But the Times noted that Trump's "relentless criticism of the Justice Department likely complicated the prosecution".

McCabe oversaw the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails and the Clinton Foundation after his wife already lost her race, and the 2016 leak was seen as damaging - not helpful - to Clinton's campaign. The report said McCabe ultimately corrected that account and confirmed that he had encouraged the conversation with the reporter to counter a narrative that he thought was false.
