Major League Baseball considering new playoff format and live selection TV show, report says

Sherman's full report can be found here.

"Expanding the playoffs in a sensible way is something worth discussing when part of a much more comprehensive conversation about the current state of our game", union head Tony Clark said in a statement.

According to the New York Post, the playoff-extension model would give the team with the best overall records in each league a bye, putting them straight through to the Division Series, and then division winners and teams with the second-best record would pick their own playoff opponents. However, if the fifth seed happened to be a really appealing matchup, either because their ace is hurt or they just have struggled against them all year, the No. 2 seed could choose to play them instead. The Division Series are all best-of-five sets in which the highest seed in each league plays the wild-card teams and the other two division winners play each other.

And if this whole proposal wasn't bonkers enough already, the selection process would all be broadcast live.

Currently, two teams from each league play a winner-take-all wild-card game, and the victor faces the team with the league's best record.

Sherman writes that the TV partners would be satisfied by having more playoff inventory and more clinching-game scenarios, as there would be a total of six three-game series before the Division Series in each league. The current collective agreement runs through the 2021 season. The Pirates would have been home for the entirety of those proposed three-game series. There would be four wild cards in each league, up from two.

Currently, baseball has the smallest playoff field (10) of any of the four major sports.

People with knowledge of the discussions confirmed MLB is considering adding two additional playoff teams in each league, bringing the number of teams across the sport that make the playoffs to 14 of 30.

It's unclear why exactly Bauer hates the alleged proposal - he wouldn't elaborate - but the new rules reportedly wouldn't take place until at least 2022.
