High levels of influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is occurring nationwide with Nebraska being one of 44 states experiencing widespread influenza activity. The severity of the season still remains to be seen, but chances are high that we will see the numbers continue [to] rise over the next few weeks.

This year's flu season has been more severe than last year's so far. The activity was moderate in Nevada and OR; falls in the District of Columbia, Alaska and Florida; and minimum in Idaho.

Overall, about 14,000 Americans have died of the flu this season.

"Most people that have the flu will feel absolutely awful, as compared to a routine cold that can cause similar symptoms, but less intense", Dr.

Flu can also exacerbate existing respiratory or lung disease. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub; avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth; clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs; where possible, avoid close contact with sick people; while sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them; cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Influenza also may worsen other chronic conditions. In addition, the MHD is offering free flu vaccines to individuals 6 months of age and older during walk-in immunization clinics, while supplies last.

Coronavirus: Russia bars entry of Chinese citizens amid virus threat

"It's not too late to get your flu shot", said Commissioner Kowalik.

Being vaccinated against influenza is especially important for anyone at high risk of complications, and for anyone who is caring for children younger than 5 years of age.

While early flu activity this season was mostly driven by influenza B/Victoria viruses, flu activity is changing and influenza A/H1N1 is increasing, according to William Schaffner, medical director for the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

"We are incredibly saddened to learn that a child has died of complications related to influenza, our thoughts are with the child's family during this hard time", said Commissioner of Health Dr. Jeanette Kowalik in a news release.

While it is impossible to completely avoid getting sick, the CDC and Florida Department of Health both recommend flu vaccines as a preventative measure.
