NYC reports first person under investigation for coronavirus

New York City health officials announced on Saturday that a patient at the Bellevue Hospital Center could have the new coronavirus.

There have been eight confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the United States and over 12,000 worldwide. If confirmed, it would be the first known instance of the virus in New York City. While some infections have resulted in severe illness, and even death, others have presented with milder symptoms and been discharged from care.

Local authorities can not analyze the virus, so they send a sample to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation.

The other U.S. cases are California (three), IL (two) and one each in Washington state and Arizona.

If you or someone you know has these symptoms, the CDC says to see a doctor but call ahead and notify them of your symptoms and recent travels.

There is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for this coronavirus, but patients are advised to seek medical attention to relieve symptoms and help track the outbreak.

Do not travel while sick.
