Oakland officer sues Ujiri for damages from shoving match at NBA Finals

"As a result of the subject incident, plaintiff Alan Strickland suffered, and will continue to suffer, physical, mental, emotional, and economic injuries, including, but not limited to, lost wages, lost opportunity for financial gain, future earning capacity, and past and future medical care and expenses", according to the lawsuit filed Friday. They are also suing the Raptors, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, and the National Basketball Association, claiming they failed to provide adequate safety and security and did not "post signs warning of danger, including the danger of Masai Ujiri". Ujiri attempted to move from the crowd to the court to join the team in its celebration but Strickland stopped him to ask for his credentials.

Several bystanders intervened and Ujiri got onto the court without displaying any credentials.

The Globe and Mail viewed still images derived from footage captured by the deputy's body camera and security video at Oracle Arena showing Ujiri with his arms raised straight in front of him toward the deputy.

Sheriff's officials have previously said that Ujiri pushed past the deputy, prompting him to push back.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office stated that the deputy involved in the incident has been placed on medical leave, although it refused to identify Strickland directly.

The suit seeks an unspecified amount "in excess" of $75,000 on allegations of assault, battery and intent.

Dele Alli accused of racism after joking about the coronavirus
The coronavirus has so far claimed the lives of over 900 people in mainland China, according to official figures. If Alli is to be charged, he may face the same punishment as Manchester City midfielder, Bernardo Silva.

According to Courthouse News Service, Strickland is claiming that he has been left with "injuries to his nervous system that will result in permanent disability".

In recent days, Ujiri has been travelling in Africa alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He has not yet commented on the suit.

But after a months-long investigation into the June incident, the Alameda County District Attorney's office said it had decided not to charge Ujiri criminally, instead suggesting the dispute should be settled "outside of the courtroom".

Ujiri and the Sheriff's Office "were in agreement with the decision to handle this matter by way of the meeting", said Teresa Drenick, a prosecutor and a spokeswoman for District Attorney Nancy O'Malley.

"It was definitely the right conclusion", Beles said in a statement to the Associated Press.
