Low-skilled workers would not get a visa under the government's proposed points-based immigration scheme, details of which have been published today. She said the new system was meant to encourage employers to retain staff, employ more British nationals and move toward automation where possible.

British authorities said that EU-workers and non-EU workers would be treated equally after UK-EU free movement ends on 31 December.

A seasonal workers' scheme will be expanded this year from 2,500 to 10,000 places in response to temporary requirements in agriculture.

The new immigration system will come into force from the 1st of January next year, and will treat European Union and non-EU citizens the same.

Under the plans, workers who don't have the equivalent of A-levels or Scottish Highers will no longer get visas.

Those earning less than £25,600, but more than £20,480, could still apply for visas if they had a job in a "specific shortage occupation" or a PhD relevant to the job.

"It is appropriate for people to speak English before coming to our country, and to have a sponsored route, whether it's through employment or an academic institution", said Home Secretary, Priti Patel.

The outline says points will be given to foreign people who want to work in Britain in accordance with their skills, qualifications, salary, proficiency in English and other factors.

"These plans spell absolute disaster for the care sector", said McAnea.

"Business must be given time to adapt", said Chief Executive Kate Nicholls. This news is just the latest example of the UK's continuing global outlook following our departure from the European Union, and further evidence of our commitment to strengthening the UK-India Living Bridge.

However, critics argue that a highly developed economy needs a far deeper supply of workers.

Student visa applicants will also have to face the UK's new points-based system from next year.

The Food and Drink Federation, National Farmers Union and UK Hospitality said they were anxious about shortages of workers as they relied on temporary low-skilled migrants.

The proposal, unveiled by the home secretary Priti Patel on Wednesday, would come into force on 1 January 2021 in a bid to scrap the country's reliance on "cheap labour from Europe".

Jobs now on the MAC's Shortage Occupation List include civil engineers, medical practitioners, nurses, psychologists and classical ballet dancers.

Some aspects of the new system will be welcomed, said Carolyn Fairbairn, director general of the Confederation of British Industry. But the policy makes clear that Johnson's government is determined to make fundamental changes in the composition of the country's low-skilled immigrant workforce.

There will be no specific route for low-skilled workers low skilled workers, or self-employed or freelance individuals on the system.

The salary threshold for skilled migrants will be lowered to £25,600 for those coming to the United Kingdom with a job offer, and there may be concessions for those earning no less than £20,480 as long as they still meet certain requirements or their occupation is short of staff.

"Our social care providers now underpin the provision in our hospitals but if more care homes, nursing homes and home care companies are forced out of business, alternative provision will have to be made for them".

Nadra Ahmed OBE, executive chair of the National Care Association, said: "This system will bring with it substantial challenges for our sector as we are now facing a call for more social care not less, and yet providers are being forced to consider exiting the market due to the workforce shortages and funding issues".

BVA president Daniella Dos Santos said: "The government's blueprint for trade will require a massive boost to the veterinary workforce to deliver veterinary certification not only for exports but, as announced last week, also for imports".
