Wireless carriers violated users' privacy with location sharing, FCC says

At least one major U.S. carrier faces the wrath of the FCC for selling customers location data

At least one major U.S. carrier faces the wrath of the FCC for selling customers location data

The accusation was referring to major wireless carriers disclosing real-time consumer location information to third-party data services, with data services then selling that sensitive info to a variety of companies without customer consent. An official documentation of how these companies violated the law will be delivered shortly. Pai said in a letter to the Committee on Energy and Commerce that the FCC's Enforcement Bureau conducted an "extensive investigation" into the matter, but he did not specify which carriers were found to have violated the law. Rep. Pallone was busy with this and prodded the FCC for upgrades late previous year, prompting the letter.

"I wish to inform you that the FCC Control Office has completed its extensive investigation and has concluded that one or more wireless operators apparently violated federal law", Pai wrote.

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden in 2018 told the FCC that wireless carriers were selling customers' location data "to a shady prison phone company" that was allowing prison guards to track Americans' cell phones. She's repeatedly brought up the problem at the meantime, apparently baffled such a large scale and clear violation was moving nearly entirely unacknowledged by the bureau. I am happy we will finally act on those egregious allegations. Accordingly, in the coming days, I intend to circulate to my fellow Commissioners for their "consideration one or more Notice (s) of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture in connection with the apparent violation (s)". This complicated-sounding document is basically the official declaration, with evidence and legal standing, that someone has violated FCC rules and may be subject to a "forfeiture", essentially a fine.

China reports 11,791 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus, 259 deaths
Since the outbreak began, reports of racism against people of Asian descent have been on the rise in the USA and around the world. An additional 191 people in more than two dozen states are under investigation for possibly having the virus.

At the moment, that is all the information that someone has, including the other commissioners, but the arrival of the notice will certainly clarify things much more and can help show exactly how seriously the agency took this problem and when it began to take measurements.

I am writing to follow up on my letter of December 3, 2019 regarding the status of the FCC's investigation into the disclosure of consumers' real-time location data. One recipient of the letter, Representative Frank Pallone from New Jersey ensures to the public in a statement that hell “be watching to make sure the FCC doesnt just let these lawbreakers off the hook with a slap on the wrist.”.
