The announcement came as 83 British citizens flew back on a chartered flight from Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the epidemic which has so far killed 213 people.

Cases of the virus have reached almost 10,000 in the country - with cases reported in 22 other countries.

The two people who were announced on Friday as having tested positive for coronavirus - the first confirmed cases in the United Kingdom - are being treated at a specialist facility in Newcastle.

Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes First Person To Hit 200 Million Followers on Instagram

Prof Peacock previously said that, while staff were working to trace people who have been in contact with the pair, they do not now have "any idea" of how high that number might be.

"We are already working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients had, to prevent further spread", Whitty added.

"The sufferers are getting expert NHS care, and we're using tried and tested disease control procedures to prevent additional spread of this virus".

"We know how distressing the situation has been for those waiting to leave".

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause disease in animals.

"We are now recommending that all travellers who develop flu-like symptoms however mild, (these symptoms could be a fever, a cough, or difficulty breathing) within 14 days of returning from mainland China, should self-isolate at home immediately and call the NHS".

On Thursday, Britain raised the perceived risk level to the country to moderate from low after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency.

But the death rate could yet go up if more of those in hospital die, or down if it's discovered there are many other people with mild symptoms.
