"We will stop at nothing to fight this virus and I think people have got the impression otherwise", Hancock said.

Britain on Sunday said its criticised plan to deal with coronavirus was created to "protect life" in a "sustainable" manner as it prepared to unveil "wartime-style" measures to tackle the outbreak.

The Government is in talks with private hospitals about the possibility of taking over beds, in a further sign of the pressures that will face the health service at the peak of the coronavirus outbreak.

Eleven new cases were confirmed in Northern Ireland, bringing the total number of known cases there to 45.

Health authorities in England announced a further 10 coronavirus deaths, nearly doubling since Friday although the toll remains lower than in Italy, Spain and France.

Meanwhile, the prime minister is to urge British companies to join a "national effort" to produce more ventilators and other medical equipment "at speed" to help the NHS deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

The government is also asking manufacturers to retool their production lines to start producing more ventilators and instructing private hospitals to get ready to take coronavirus patients who can not be treated in overstretched public hospitals.

Mr Hancock said the United Kingdom is likely to need many times more than the current 5,000 in the country.

USA airports struggle to cope with crowds, some passengers face eight-hour delays
The massive lines came hours after the Trump administration's 30-day travel ban on most of Europe took effect. IL governor JB Pritzker said the long lines at Chicago's O'Hare airport were "unacceptable".

Hancock was asked by the BBC's Andrew Marr when the new rule comes into place, it has been reported to last as long as four months?

"Despite the pounding every night, the rationing, the loss of life, they pulled together in one very big national effort", he wrote.

It follows strong criticism of the government's strategy from more than 200 scientists, who have written to ministers urging them to introduce tougher measures to tackle the spread of Covid-19.

Shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth told Sky News' Sophy Ridge the public does not want ambiguity from the government.

He added: "If things have changed since the prime minister's press conference on Thursday then the prime minister should be doing another press conference today and explaining why things have changed".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has asked for "urgent sight" of the draft laws and for a meeting with the prime minister to discuss the crisis.

Mr Hancock also confirmed a report that emergency legislation being drawn up by the Government will include allowing police the power to arrest infected citizens.

He also promised that the government would publish its models "in the next couple of days" following demands from the scientific community to see the underlying data.
