Coronavirus: US FDA warns companies selling products that claim to treat disease

FDA FTC Begin Crack Down on Coronavirus Claims

FDA FTC Begin Crack Down on Coronavirus Claims

The warning letters were announced this morning and resulted from FDA reviews of the claims being made on the companies' websites.

There are no approved treatments for the virus, and none are likely to be ready for months or years.

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Monday (March 9) issued warning letters to seven companies for selling products that claim to prevent, treat or cure Covid-19 caused by the new coronavirus.

The letters, the first issued by the agencies alleging bogus claims related to coronavirus, were sent to Vital Silver, Quinessence Aromatherapy Ltd., N-ergetics, GuruNanda LLC, Vivify Holistic Clinic, Herbal Amy LLC and The Jim Bakker Show.

Almost all the companies complied by then, with mentions of the virus or products to treat it removed from their websites. There are no approved vaccines, drugs or other now available products to treat or prevent the virus.

Asked if the Silver Solution would be effective against the COVID-19 coronavirus, Sellman replied, "Let's say it hasn't been tested on this strain of the coronavirus, but it's been tested on other strains of the coronavirus and it has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours".

Iowans with questions about COVID-19 can call the state's hotline at 2-1-1. Kim Reynolds said Tuesday the state is monitoring the situation closely.

"The FDA considers the sale and promotion of fraudulent COVID-19 products to be a threat to public health", FDA commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D., said in the news release.

Attorney General Letitia James's office sent a cease-and-desist order to Jim Bakker Tuesday ordering him to stop promoting "Silver Solution" as a remedy for the coronavirus.

Furthermore, the FDA added that colloidal silver "is not safe or effective for treating any disease or condition", as explained in a final rule on the substance issued in 1999.

"The 2019 novel coronavirus poses serious consequences to public health, and consumers are concerned as to how they can best protect themselves and their families", James said in the letter.

"In addition to being mindful about our health, we must also beware of unscrupulous actors who attempt to take advantage of this fear and anxiety to scam or deceive consumers", James said in a statement.

The letters argue that the coronavirus cure claims could put the warned companies in violation of federal law and that if they continue, the FTC could seek a court injunction and order mandating that they refund money to consumers.
