CVS isn't alone. Rival drugstore chain Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. on Sunday said it plans to hire more than 9,500 people, while Inc. plans to hire 100,000, and Walmart Inc.

CVS operates more than 9,900 pharmacies around the United States, which have found themselves on the frontlines of the response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, the company said it was opening a COVID-19 testing site for a limited population in the parking lot of a CVS pharmacy in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. As Americans stay at home, they're ordering goods online and going to drug and grocery stores to stock up. In addition, the company is giving bonuses of up to $300 to employees able to work amid the outbreak.

New hires will fill full-time, part-time and temporary roles across the country including store associates, prescription delivery drivers, distribution center employees and customer service professionals.

CEO Larry Merlo said in a statement that the move is a way for the company to help its employees have peace of mind in uncertain times.

CVS also is extending its paid sick leave to part-time employees during the pandemic. CVS Health said it is working with the Bright Horizons network of national in-home and center-based daycare providers.

Part-time employees now have up to 24 hours of sick leave, effective Monday, CVS said.

CVS Health Corp. said it plans to hire 50,000 people in full-time, part-time and temporary jobs to tackle surging demand for drugstore services and health goods during the USA coronavirus outbreak. The additional benefits and hiring come shortly after employees launched a petition calling for better support during the pandemic, including sick leave, family care, crisis pay, and protective gear like face masks.

The company announced it will give $500 bonuses to its employees who have to be there during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Many roles will be filled by existing CVS Health clients who have had to furlough workers, including Hilton and Marriott", it is said in a press release.
