Participants included Nicolas Hamilton, brother of Britain's six time world champion Lewis Hamilton, English golfer Ian Poulter who competed from the garage of his home in Florida, singer and songwriter Liam Payne, and retired ex-F1 race victor Johnny Herbert.

"We recognise there is significant potential for additional postponements in now scheduled events, nonetheless we and our partners fully expect the season to start at some point this summer, with a revised calendar of between 15-18 races, Carey said".

The March 15 opener in Australia has also been cancelled while Bahrain, Vietnam, China, the Netherlands and Spain are postponed with no alternative dates proposed as yet and more races in doubt.

"We are very pleased to be able to bring some light relief in the form of the F1 Esports Virtual GP, in these unpredictable times, as we hope to entertain fans missing the regular sporting action", said the head of digital business initiatives and esports Julian Tan.

Carey said F1 had made space for postponed races in August by moving the traditional mid-season break to March and April, and by taking a decision to extend the season beyond the original finale on November 29. Sky says Herbert, a retired F1 driver who raced professionally between 1989 and 2000, and is now a Sky commentator, provided two of the race's most memorable moments. "We are engaging with experts and officials on a daily basis as we evaluate how we go forward in the next few months".

Formula One's authorities had earmarked the 7 June as a potential start date for the new season after the opening seven grands prix were called off.

Carey explained that the season would be extended into December to accommodate extra races, and that teams would be compelled to race throughout the traditional August rest period.

F1 has in the past week made a series of changes to try to put itself in the best possible shape once racing can resume.

Last week, F1 confirmed it would delay the introduction of its 2021 cars by a year, with the current chassis to be carried over into next season.

The Bahrain Virtual Grand Prix has seen "music artist Liam Payne, professional golfer Ian Poulter and six-time Olympic Gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy" (as per the official Codemasters blog) going head-to-head with actual F1 drivers.
