IPhone 12 reportedly 'delayed for months'

Apple's iPhone 12 family was widely expected to launch this September, following the company's usual release strategy.

Apple is considering delaying the launch of its 5G iPhone 12 line "by months", according to a report citing supply chain sources who say the development of engineering prototypes has been severely delayed as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, via Nikkei Asian Review.

Apple right now is closely monitoring the coronavirus outbreaks in the USA and Europe, its two largest markets, and assessing whether a delay of the iPhone 12 family is necessary.

For a while now, we've assumed the iPhone 12 would possibly avoid the coronavirus-related delays that have become ubiquitous with major products.

Apple is also allegedly concerned that the current economic and health situation might lead consumers to delay plans to upgrade their phones. "They need the first 5G iPhone to be a hit".

This week, Apple told employees it planned to extend global work from home until April 8, and that stores will begin to open once again in mid-April in a phased manner.

Apple is supposedly waiting and watching until May before it makes a final decision on the timetable for the iPhone 12 launch.

In terms of how far they'll push the release back, the company is discussing a change that would delay the release by months, which would mean the earliest release date may be right smack-dab in the holiday season.

Bloomberg notes in the extreme the handset could be delayed all the way till 2021. The two high-end ones might pack a triple camera system and a lidar sensor, too.
