The World Health Organization declared Wednesday that the global coronavirus crisis is now a pandemic as USA stocks plunged into bear market territory and several American cities joined European counterparts in banning large gatherings. "We will only be able to see the effects of this great effort in a couple of weeks", Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said.

Asian stocks tumbled in volatile business following the worst day on Wall Street since the crash of 1987 as traders scrambled to sell, wiping trillions off market valuations.

New infections also rose sharply in Spain, and the government put 60,000 people in four towns on a mandatory lockdown Friday that echoed Italy's. In Madrid, which has more than 2,000 infections, the government announced it would pool intensive care units and consider offers by hotel chains to transform rooms into wards. This increase is just within 24 hours difference, of the count.

In China, where new infections have tailed off to the point where Hubei province only reported five new cases, authorities mobilised to quarantine new arrivals for 14 days.

South Korea, once grappling with the largest outbreak outside China, saw newly recovered patients exceed fresh infections for the first time and the lowest number of new cases for three weeks. The Dow closed up 9.4 percent following Trump's emergency measures.

But Conte said fighting Italy's more than 10,000 infections - the biggest outbreak outside of China - must not come at the expense of civil liberties. Worldwide, more than 137,000 people have been infected but about 70,000 of those who had the virus have already recovered.

After downplaying the threat of the virus for days, U.S. President Donald Trump was considering a national disaster declaration and new travel advisories. "We have rung the alarm bell loud and clear", said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the World Health Organization chief.

The US House of Representatives also overwhelmingly passed a virus relief package early Saturday for Americans hit by the outbreak. China, where the virus emerged late a year ago, still accounts for more than 60% of global infections but on Friday reported just eight new cases and seven deaths.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told the U.N. leader his nation was returning to normal and now wants to conduct joint research on drugs and vaccines and offer "as much assistance as it can" to countries in need. A Chinese medical crew arrived in Italy and surplus supplies were sent to Iran. Many patient zero's in countries are from or have been these places.

The pandemic's new centre is Europe.

Meanwhile in Europe, Denmark shut all schools and universities after a 10-fold rise in cases since Monday, and strain is mounting on Italy's healthcare system despite all efforts to contain the outbreak. In Spain, the number of cases surged past the 2,000-mark on Wednesday. Panic buying was seen around the continent. The country's restaurants, cafes and retail shops closed.

Avoid public/ crowded places. In India, a total number of 63 people have been tested positive for the virus. His son, Eduardo, denied the claim.

"Both the President and Vice President had nearly no interactions with the individual who tested positive and do not require being tested at this time", White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

Despite that, Trump has no immediate plans to be tested or go into self-quarantine, the White House said. Trump has halted his trademark political rallies, following the lead of Democratic rivals Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

In Iran, by far the hardest-hit country in the Middle East, the senior vice president and two other Cabinet ministers were reported to have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. Among those testing positive were the Canadian prime minister's wife, a top aide to Iran's supreme leader, Miami's mayor, a Brazilian official who met with Trump, and an Australian Cabinet minister who met with the USA attorney general and Trump's daughter, Ivanka. The Australian home affairs minister was hospitalised in isolation after testing positive. He returned home on Sunday from Washington, D.C., where he met with U.S. Attorney-General William Barr, Trump's daughter and Sen. The death total jumped from 189 to 1,016, with it still rapidly spreading. Professional athletes and entertainers were among those infected.

Trump's announcement came as tens of millions of students around the world faced weeks without classes, security forces went on standby to guard against large gatherings, and bars, restaurants and offices closed. Gatherings were canceled or banned from California to Germany.

Yet decisions still loomed for the biggest athletic competition of the year - the 2020 Summer Olympics - which was still firmly on the calendar.

In Tokyo, the pandemic classification fuelled concern over how the coronavirus will affect the Summer Olympic Games, scheduled to start July 24. The Czech government said it would reimpose border checks and bar entry to people from 13 countries, including Britain and several in the European Union.
