Italy is the worst-hit country on the continent and has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world after China.

In the last 24 hours, 345 more people have died in Italy from the Chinese coronavirus, which brings the nation's death toll to 2,503 on Tuesday, up from 2,158 on Monday - an increase of 16 percent in one day.

The Italian financial capital's Lombardy region recorded 1,420 deaths, of 66% of Italy's total - about the same share it has had throughout the crisis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) puts the global pandemic cases at about 165,000 and death toll almost 6,500.

Stuart was included on the Hollywood walk of Fame in 1998. "Thank you for the joy and laughter you gave us through the years". The final time Whitman labored in a movie was twenty years in the past in The President's Man , starring Chuck Norris .

Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CBS Sunday morning that Italy left "the virus to its own defenses" leading the number of cases to "go way up".

Italians are cooped up at home by a government decree to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Fatalities in Italy's coronavirus outbreak have surpassed 2,500, while the number of Covid-19 cases in the country have far exceeded those remaining in China - where the epidemic began - with more than 31,000 active infections.

Pope Francis left the Vatican on Sunday to walk through Rome's empty streets to pray for an "end to the pandemic", CNN cited a Vatican news release.
