Until Thursday morning, China - where the virus surfaced late a year ago - had the most fatalities at 3,245, which was up only eight from the previous day, as the spread appears to be under control.

An additional 643 cases have been confirmed over the course of 24 hours, taking the total in the United Kingdom to 3,269 confirmed cases. Italy's outbreak came to light in the north of the country on February 21. The figure overtakes the number of total deaths in China from the outbreak.

While the number of confirmed cases is just about half of that reported in China where the disease originated, Italy is not yet out of the woods as it is still reporting new cases.

The outbreak was first recorded in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019, and has since spread around the world at an alarming rate, infecting over 236,000 people and causing more than 9,800 deaths.
