COVID-19 Cases soar deaths top 2,500 in Italy

Two people walk in Rome's Piazza Navona, deserted, Tuesday evening.

In one small, hopeful sign, the rise in the number of active cases in Italy, the epicenter of the outbreak in Europe, slowed to 10%, the weakest gain in over a week.

Italy's death count alone is 2,978.

Some 3,245 people have died in China since the virus first emerged there late a year ago, but Italy's outbreak only came to light on February 21.

United Nations and Italian health authorities have cited a variety of reasons for Italy's high toll, key among them its large elderly population that is particularly susceptible to developing serious complications from the virus.

Medical experts say the new virus is killing people over 65 at a much higher rate than other age groups.

"We will not be able to return immediately to life as it was before", he said.

"Extraordinary times require extraordinary action".

In the US, Congress rushed to pass a US$1 trillion emergency package to shore up the sinking economy and help households pull through the crisis, with the first of two possible rounds of relief checks consisting of payments of US$1000 per adult and US$500 for each child.

The country, where more than 1100 people have already died, previously freed 85,000 prisoners on temporary leave.

Once the outbreak is contained and travel resumes, Marriott expects to bring back "as numerous furloughed employees as possible". Through a Marriott spokeswoman, the Journal reported the jobs are from hotel managers down to housekeeping.

Trump said he viewed himself as a "wartime president", even as his administration faced growing criticism over a lack of testing for coronavirus and for the speed of its response.

The battle is only just beginning across the rest of the world, with the shadow of the virus lengthening across Africa. The first sub-Saharan Africa case was announced February 28.

Russian Federation reported its first death and even the Pacific nation of Fiji said it had its first case.

Similarly, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was talking about letting the virus run its course last week, yesterday acknowledged that Britons now need to put "physical distance" between each other, and that his government "will do whatever it takes".

While the European Union has closed its borders to outsiders, in many countries bars, restaurants and most shops have closed their doors until further notice, bringing life in Europe's normally bustling cities to a halt.

English football also extended its shutdown until at least April 30.

Given the overwhelming evidence that such measures do work, and that the number of cases increase nearly geometrically in their absence, these countries too are also likely to be forced to put in place similar measures by the end of this week.

As others stockpiled toilet paper and pasta, the French are thronging bakeries for their famed baguettes.

"Right now we need to stop all economic activity and we need to stop the mobility of people", he said.
