Ministers plan police powers to arrest coronavirus patients not self-isolating

The total number of confirmed United Kingdom cases of the virus has reached 1372, with a total of 40,279 people being tested, according to the latest figures released by the Department of Health and Social Care.

Britain's death toll from the disease almost doubled on Saturday, as health officials announced 10 more people had died, bringing the total number of fatalities to 21.

Cases of the illness have been increasing over the past few days and weeks, with official statistics indicating more than 1,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus.

The news comes after a hospital patient has tested positive for coronavirus in Norwich.

Over-70s and younger people with certain health conditions will need to remain at home and have groceries and vital medication delivered, the health secretary said.

What were saying to them is, reduce your contact.

Critics have accused the government of not acting quickly enough to contain the spread, but the government has said that it is taking the advice of experts, including behavioural scientists, on when to deploy the measures.

"We've already seen many sporting events being canceled and lots of these big gatherings being canceled".

He reiterated on The Andrew Marr Show that anyone with any kind of symptom, no matter how mild, "must" stay at home and self-isolate.

He said vehicle manufacturers, weapon makers and army suppliers would be asked to change their production lines to make ventilators for use in hospitals treating coronavirus - which can cause severe breathing problems.

The company chairman, Lord Bamford, said it is "unclear as yet" whether it can assist, but its research and engineering teams are "actively looking" at the request.

The UK government appears to have shifted it policy for fighting COVID-19.

"The goal here is to protect life, the measures have to be sustainable", he later told the BBC.

It's part of a series of measures being prepared by Hancock, Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty and Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance to prevent the NHS from "falling over".

"No number is too high".

It's not an easy thing for people to do, it's not an easy thing for people to sustain.

The minister earlier used an article in the Sunday Telegraph to liken the coronavirus crisis to World War II.

"Despite the pounding every night, the rationing, the loss of life, they pulled together in one very big national effort".

We will take these decisions at the right time.

Labour's shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth asked for reassurance from the government about some of the "very stringent powers" ministers hope to introduce.

"People just want clear advice".

"We are absolutely ready to do that", he told Sky News's Sophy Ridge.

The health secretary then announced that emergency legislation would be set out on Tuesday and published on Thursday.
