Pope Francis has announced two extraordinary spiritual events to help the world as it struggles with the coronavirus: a universal prayer and a special blessing.

"Urbi et Orbi is very a significant blessing which normally is only given by Pope Francis on Christmas and Easter".

This photo taken and handout on March 26, 2020 by the Vatican Media shows Pope Francis delivering his homily while celebrating a private morning mass at the Santa Marta chapel in The Vatican.

He also offered a prayer for health workers and priests who have died helping those who are sick from coronavirus, praising their "heroic example".

In an introduction to the "Our Father", which is also known as "The Lord's Prayer", he said it was also for "the sick and their families, health workers and those who assist them, for authorities, police forces and volunteers, for the (religious) ministers of our communities".

Vatican City: Pope Francis has urged all Christians to unite in prayer on March 25 as a response to the global coronavirus pandemic.

I reiterate to all my invitation to participate spiritually, through the media, in the moment of prayer at which I will preside the day after tomorrow, Friday, at 6 p.m., in front of Saint Peter's Basilica.

But let's open streets, let's open space - that's where people should be, in open spaces areas, not in dense locations".

At the close of his remarks following the Angelus, Pope Francis expressed his closeness to the people of Croatia, which was struck by magnitude 5.4 quake Sunday morning. The blessing is for the possibility of attaining a plenary indulgence.

"We want to respond to the pandemic of the virus with the universality of prayer, compassion, tenderness".

In this case, the person must also fulfill the ordinary conditions of an indulgence, which are sacramental confession, reception of the Eucharist, and prayer for the intentions of the pope, by having the will to satisfy the conditions as soon as possible for them.

Speaking after the traditional recitation of the Angelus, the Holy Father called on all Christians to join together in prayer.

The pope is said to have no plans to move to a different residence despite cases of the disease in Vatican city. "In these trying days, while humanity trembles due to the thread of the pandemic, I would like to propose to all Christians that together we lift our voices towards Heaven", he said.

Il Messaggero said the person is "one of the pope's closest collaborators, an official of the Secretariate of the State, who was found to have a slight temperature after going in for a routine check".
