Queen's garden parties and Chelsea Flower Show cancelled amid coronavirus fears

Queen Elizabeth is taking precautionary measures amid the escalating coronavirus pandemic.

The press release also states that Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royal family will no longer be attending a number of large gatherings in the next few months.

In a statement from Buckingham Palace, the 93-year-old monarch has chose to leave London and move to Windsor Castle tomorrow, a week earlier than planned, as a "sensible precaution and for practical reasons in the current circumstances".

It added that the Queen will move to Windsor Castle for her Easter break on Thursday 19 March, one week earlier than planned, and it is likely that she will stay there beyond that period.

Planned investitures - events at which members of the public receive honors from a member of the royal family - will also be rearranged.

The Queen is still set to meet the commanding officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth, despite the cancellation of garden parties at Buckingham Palace over the coronavirus crisis.

The queen typically spends most weekends at the castle about 25 miles west of London, and weekdays in Buckingham Palace in central London. "Other events will be reviewed on an ongoing basis in line with the appropriate advice".

Artist stranded on Braemar cruise ship
Fred Olsen ship Braemar is now docked in the Bahamas and is receiving medical supplies off Freeport, the line has confirmed. New passengers boarded and the ship headed for Jamaica as it continued to the Western Caribbean and Central America.

The Royal Horticultural Society confirmed it was calling off the Chelsea Flower Show, its flagship event of the summer.

Planned audiences scheduled to take place at Buckingham Palace this week will go ahead, including a meeting with UK Prime Minister.

The royal family's statement also made it clear it is making steadfast decisions based on advice from the family's "medical household" as well as government officials. The fate of future big royal events - including May commemorations for the end of World War II in Europe and a state visit by Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masakois - is up in the air.

Last week, members of the Royal Family attended the Commonwealth Day Service among hundreds at Westminster Abbey.

As information about the coronavirus pandemic rapidly changes, PEOPLE is committed to providing the most recent data in our coverage.

Guests invited to the parties, the statement continues, will be extended an invitation for ones in 2021 so they can still attend.
