Second case of COVID-19 confirmed in Wisconsin

Wisconsin health officials say a second person in the state has tested positive for coronavirus, this time in Pierce County along the Minnesota border.

Pierce County Health Officials say they are working closely with their partners to respond to the situation, and the person who is isolated at their home is cooperating.

If COVID-19 begins to spread in Wisconsin communities, state and local public health officials would consider community interventions such as temporary closures of child care facilities and schools, workplace social distancing, measures such as replacing in-person meetings with teleworking, and modifying, postponing or canceling mass gatherings. If you start experiencing symptoms like fever, cough or trouble breathing, seek medical attention.

DHS said officials will hold a media briefing Tuesday to answer further questions.

The state Department of Health Services (DHS) officials announced Monday that two new facilities are conducting testing.

Performing follow-up testing for individuals who test positive to determine when a person can be released from isolation.

Officials last week suggested that residents stock up on two weeks worth of food and water in case they need to be isolated for coronavirus. "Their family is also staying home".

Testing is recommended only for people who are symptomatic for the disease. "If you do the math it gets very disturbing", he said. Ron DeSantis said last week that an older man who works at the port and had contact with cruise line passengers tested positive.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness.

The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.

In a letter posted on their website, the School District of Osceola in Polk County said that someone "who attended the Destination Imagination event at Osceola High School on Saturday, March 7th has a confirmed case of COVID-19".

The district says it will continue to work with public health officials to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Blank said UW-Madison was canceling and suspending all university-sponsored travel, including spring break trips, to countries severely affected by the virus.

That patient had recently traveled to China. Everyone returning from spring break outside of Madison are required to self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days, she said.
