Vice President Mike Pence said he and his wife, Karen Pence, would get tested for the coronavirus Saturday afternoon after a member of Pence's staff tested positive for the virus Friday night.

Pence told reporters earlier this week that he has not been tested for the virus because the White House doctor had told him he didn't need to be.

Meanwhile, Washington state health officials reported eight new coronavirus deaths Friday.

He said that neither he nor President Trump had any contact with the staffer, and that they had worked with the CDC and the White House.

The news came as Covid-19-linked deaths in the U.S. rose to 216 - more than doubling in three days - with more than 16,600 confirmed infections, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Last week, a staffer for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro also tested positive for the coronavirus, after he had taken pictures with Trump at his Florida resort of Mar-a-Lago during a working visit to the US. Earlier, two USA lawmakers also said they had contracted the disease.

Pence's spokeswoman Katie Miller says the unidentified staff member did not have "close contact" to either the vice president or President Donald Trump.

'I'm pleased to report that he's doing well.

Trump has previously asserted an Obama-era regulation prevented the government from more quickly developing and distributing tests for coronavirus.

Trump tested negative for the novel coronavirus last week.
