Canada's Senate has passed the $56-billion economic support package announced last week by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in response to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the upper legislative chamber said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Right now, it is more important than ever that Canadians have access to the latest news and information", Trudeau said. Since last Monday, 1430,000 people have applied for financial assistance from the government.

The benefit is also for those who may still be employed, but are not recieving income because of the COVID-19 crisis, and parents who are home looking after their children without pay, he said.

Canadians who are out of work because of the coronavirus pandemic will be eligible for up to CAN$2,000 ($1,399) a month for four months, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday. "This would help businesses keep their employees as they navigate these hard times, while ensuring they preserve the ability to quickly resume operations as soon as it becomes possible", the government said in a press release.

In an update on Wednesday, Mr Trudeau said people will receive funds 10 days after they make their claim.

"It remains a challenge to maintain those supply lines but we are monitoring on a daily basis and I can tell you truck traffic is moving very freely and readily across our border", he said. Hajdu's release said "spot checks" would be conducted by the government "to verify compliance".

It would apply to any affected workers between March 15 and October 3.

And, it’s important to account for the time and effort spent by administrative staff handling these denied claims. They also have the potential to adversely affect patients’ opinions about the organization.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business called the new benefit a "significant step forward", but said it didn't change the need to increase the 10 per cent wage subsidy to 75 per cent or higher as many business and labour groups have requested.

Sports equipment maker Bauer Hockey plans to modify its hockey visors into face shields for healthcare workers, while retailers Canada Goose Holdings, and Gap Inc said they would produce medical gear.

The prime minister also said "this is only the beginning", adding that he had more measures to announce - including for businesses.

"To come through this, we must all look after each other and do our share".

The bill allows the federal government up to $52 billion in funds to directly help Canadians, including a repackaged aid program for workers who can't work for nearly any reason connected to the virus.

As Trudeau was making the announcement, the Canadian Senate was reviewing a CAN$82 billion ($57 billion) stimulus package.

Legislation enacting $52 billion worth of financial aid and another $55 billion worth of tax deferrals was approved yesterday by Parliament but the money won't actually start flowing for another few weeks.
