Trump discourages travel, European ban expanded to U.K., Ireland

Donald Trump originally exempted Britain and Ireland but United States vice president Mike Pence announced the coronavirus travel ban will be extended at 4am GMT on Tuesday. "We're canceling group activities and communal dining", and nursing home workers are being screened for COVID-19.

Vice President Mike Pence later followed up confirming the ban would be in effect from Monday night, but added that Americans and USA residents currently in Europe would still be able to return home, once completing the screening process now set up within the United States.

Additionally, acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf said the travel ban applies to foreigners who have been in the United Kingdom or Ireland within the last 14 days. Regardless, he advised Americans not to travel if they "don't have to" because "we want this thing to end". "We're all getting out of that", he said.

Unlike Trump's address to the nation, where he announced the initial European restrictions, Pence was explicit in saying that American citizens would still be able to return to the US. The virus has been found in almost every state, in addition to the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. These individuals will be screened at USA airports and subject to 14-day self-quarantines, he said Saturday in a White House briefing.

Speaking at the same news conference, President Trump said he had been tested himself and expected to get the results in the next 48 hours.

Trump recently hosted a Brazilian delegation at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where he came into contact with multiple people who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson "ruled out aggressive measures like school closings to fight the coronavirus" earlier this week, the New York Times reports.

Like that ban, U.S. citizens and their family members will be exempt.

The Pentagon added that its civilian employees and family members, "whose transportation is government-funded, will also stop movement".

When he asked by a reporter if he was considering any U.S.travel restrictions, Trump said: "Yes, specifically from certain areas, yes we are".

Public health officials argue that such travel restrictions will do little to curb the outbreak given how thoroughly COVID-19 has spread throughout the country already.

The president's decision to get tested came after a back-and-forth over whether he should take such a step. The coronavirus pandemic has claimed more than 5,700 lives in some 137 countries. Grocery stores, drug stores, banks and gas stations will be allowed to stay open.

"It felt like if we don't make our flight today, we're going to be stuck in Paris", she said.

Some of the world's biggest companies have also announced new protective measures.

The Brazilian Embassy in Washington announced late Friday that the country's charge d'affaires, Nestor Forster, tested positive after sitting at Trump's dinner table. "And yet", he added, "I have been inspired by the humanity and determination I have seen from all corners of our global community".

Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, gave an update on the number of cases and deaths globally and in the U.S.
