What is ivermectin and what is used for?

Ivermectin is available on the PBS and costs around $24 here, in third world countries it is for sale for as little as 10-30 cents per tablet.

It is now used as a treatment for strongyloidiasis, a parasitic disease caused by roundworms that affects an estimated 30 million to 100 million people worldwide. Dr Wagstaff has been studying the drug and its ability to kill off viruses for over a decade. It is administered to patients once every six to 12 months.

Ivermectin is commonly used to treat parasites. It is available on the market in drugs including Ivexterm, Ivergot, Dermoper IV, Detebencil, Evanix, Iver P and Ivertal and usually administered in pill form, although it is also manufactured as drops, creams and injectable solutions.

"But our next step is to work out whether those safe doses are then able to be used on the virus and how we could then translate that to infected people". According to the Institute of Discovery in Biomedical from the University of Monash (Melbourne) in conjunction with the Institute Doherty, this pest has been successfully tested in cell cultures. The study has been published online in the journal Antiviral Research.

"As the virologist who was part of the team who were first to isolate and share SARS-COV2 outside of China in January 2020, I am excited about the prospect of Ivermectin being used as a potential drug against COVID-19", said Leon Caly, study co-author from the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia.

Dr Wagstaff made a previous breakthrough finding on Ivermectin in 2012 when she identified the drug and its antiviral activity with Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute's Professor David Jans, also an author on this paper.

McCarthy, 61, whose first spell in charge saw him lead the Republic to the 2002 World Cup, succeeded Martin O'Neill in the role. STEPHEN KENNY has replaced Mick McCarthy as manager of the Republic of Ireland soccer team.

Ivermectin is an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug that has also proven to be effective in vitro against a broad range of viruses including HIV, Dengue, Influenza and Zika virus.

Wagstaff noted that the tests conducted so far were done in vitro (conducted outside a living organism) and said trials needed to be carried out in people next.

Wagstaff, who began investigating the effectiveness of Ivermectin on SARS-CoV-2 as soon as the pandemic was known, said more funding was urgently required to keep progressing the work.

"Realistically, it's going to be a while before a vaccine is broadly available", it said.

"It's really important that people aren't jumping to conclusions that they can self-medicate and find a potential cure for Covid19", Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos told 9News.

"Ivermectin is not indicated for any viral indications at all".
