The proposal, he said, will offer $500 cash grants for individuals in the US illegally and up to $1,000 for families, with applications set to be accepted starting next month.

Newsom said that he is allowing undocumented immigrants to have presumptive eligibility, through the state's Medi-Cal system, to get tested at community clinics, allowing those clinics to get reimbursed not just for the test, but also treatment related to COVID-19.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a series of new measures by his state to provide financial relief to citizens suffering because of Covid-19 lockdown measures.

At the Governor's direction, the Employment Development Department (EDD) will launch a new call center on Monday that will operate 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m.to 8:00 p.m.

"We feel a deep sense of gratitude for people that are in fear of deportations that are still addressing essential needs of tens of millions of Californians", said Newsom, a Democrat, who noted 10 percent of the state's workforce consisted of immigrants living in the country illegally who paid over $2.5 billion in state and local taxes past year.

PUA will provide federally funded benefits distinct from UI program for those out of work or partially unemployed because of the coronavirus, including the self-employed.

California has an estimated 2 million immigrants living in the country illegally.

The state will contribute $75 million in disaster-relief assistance, Newsom said, while several nonprofit foundations committed to raising $50 million through the new California Immigrant Resilience Fund.

'We want this to be as equitable as possible and benefit as many people as possible, ' said Daranee Petsod, president of Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees.

"An overrepresentation of that workforce is undocumented in the areas that are so essential to meeting the needs of tens of millions of Californians today", Newsom said.

The Governor also announced an unprecedented $125 million in disaster relief assistance for working Californians. They are not eligible for the $2.2 trillion stimulus package approved by Congress last month, which gives cash payments to most Americans plus boosts unemployment benefits by $600 per week.

The governor said the aid will be dispersed "through a community-based model of regional nonprofits with expertise and experience serving undocumented communities".

"Regardless of your status, documented or undocumented, there are people in need".
