British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been taken into intensive care after being admitted to hospital on Sunday for the coronavirus.

But, having been in hospital for tests and observation, his doctors advised that he be admitted to intensive care.

"On the advice of his doctor, the Prime Minister has tonight been admitted to hospital for tests", a Downing Street spokesperson said.

Mr Johnson has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to deputise for him.

"This is a precautionary step, as the Prime Minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus ten days after testing positive for the virus".

The update on the 55-year-old PM's health came after he was admitted to a National Health Service (NHS) hospital in London on Sunday evening on medical advice in what Downing Street said was a "precautionary" measure for some tests.

ITV News reported that Johnson had received oxygen support on Monday, which is not necessarily intubation with a ventilator, adding that he remains conscious.

"I'm in good spirits and keeping in touch with my team, as we work together to fight this virus and keep everyone safe", Johnson said in a Twitter post.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson Admitted to Hospital Amid Coronavirus Battle
He has been in self-isolation and working from his Downing Street flat since he tested positive for Covid-19 on March 27. Downing Street said Sunday the hospitalization was a "precautionary step" and he remained in charge of the government.

The prime minister will continue to lead the government, although Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary, will temporarily stand in as leader if Johnson is unable to work.

"I know for him personally it will be very frustrating that he's had to go to the hospital to have these tests, and he'll want to be back in Number 10 (Downing Street ) leading from the front, which is his way", Jenrick told the BBC's Today program on Monday morning.

Derek Hill, a professor of medical imaging science at University College London, said that since COVID-19 causes difficulty breathing, one test performed on people with the disease is lung imaging with ultrasound or CT scans to see how badly they might be affected. The prime minister checked into St. Thomas' Hospital in London on Sunday.

Ministers and members of the newly formed shadow cabinet were quick to offer their support to the prime minister within minutes of the news.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer - who was elected leader of the U.K.s opposition Labour party on Saturday - wished the prime minister a "speedy recovery".

"All the country's thoughts are with the prime minister and his family during this incredibly hard time", he added.

Meanwhile, the latest official figures showed 5,373 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the United Kingdom as of 5pm on Sunday - an increase of 439 on the previous day.
