31-year-old granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Beatrice and her fiancé, 37-year-old Italian businessman Edoardo Mazzi called off the wedding.

"There are no plans to switch venues or hold a bigger wedding", the couple's spokesperson said. "The time will come, and Princess Beatrice and Edoardo again plan, but while they took a break".

Buckingham Palace had previously confirmed the reception set to take place in their gardens was cancelled.

Meanwhile, Beatrice's mother Sarah Ferguson, who is affectionately known as Fergie, recently insisted her daughter is happier than ever thanks to her romance with Edoardo.

Prince Andrew's public disgrace earlier this year was another blow for Princess Beatrice.

The pair announced their engagement on September 26 a year ago, with photos showcasing Beatrice's stunning new diamond ring, which Edoardo designed in collaboration with British jewellery designer Shaun Leane. Unfortunately for brides, the restrictions on large gatherings also mean that many of their weddings will have to be rescheduled.

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi will no longer be getting married in May.

The rest of the York family including Bea's beloved sister Princess Eugenie are now staying at Prince Andrew's home the Royal Lodge.

But due to the recent announcement from the british health authorities, which says that the country will be placed under lockdown at least three weeks yet, it will not be for nothing. That is why they wanted to hold the ceremony in the smallest of friends and family.

Buckingham Palace last night denied that a decision had been made on the wedding itself, with a spokesman saying there had been no change to a statement issued in mid-March.
