Spanish coronavirus death toll rises by 812 in 24 hours

In Europe, meanwhile, hard-hit Italy and Spain saw their death tolls climb by more than 800 each but the World Health Organisation's emergency chief said cases there were "potentially stabilising".

Catalan business group Foment del Treball called for further measures to cushion the blow from the enforced shutdown and said the state should cover 75% of labour costs incurred during the period by companies with limited access to funds.

Italy reported that more than 800 people had died in the past day, bringing the country's death toll to almost 11,600.

With both new infections and deaths up around 11% each, Spain is seeing a slight rebound in the outbreak.

Spain confirmed another 812 deaths in 24 hours from the coronavirus on Monday, a slight decline on the previous day's toll, bringing the total number of deaths to 7,340. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause severe symptoms like pneumonia and even death.

In Britain, the cumulative caseload crossed the 20,000 mark on Monday, reaching 22,141.

In the USA, more than 3,000 people have died from Covid-19, while there have been at least 160,698 confirmed cases detected through United States public health systems. The Swiss government has declared plans to provide 42 billion CHF for economic relief during the pandemic.
