Five people killed in fire in intensive care unit at St. Petersburg hospital

It is not clear how many people have been injured.

All the patients who died at St George Hospital had been on ventilators. "The artificial lung ventilation devices are working at their limits", they explained. A source told news agency Interfax that the fire broke out in one of the ventilators.

The emergency ministry told the RIA news agency that the blaze erupted in a patient's room, without providing further details.

All the deceased patients were on ventilator.

Russia's emergency services are straining as the country struggles to contain its own outbreak of the coronavirus.

Moscow has begun investigating the safety of a Russian-made medical ventilator, some of which have been sent to the United States though not used, after six people died in hospital fires reported to involve two such machines. Russian emergency officials said all five had been put on ventilators.

LeBron, Kawhi, Giannis among stars on call with goal of resuming
Haynes says many players not on playoff contenders feel the season should only resume with playoff teams to minimize the risk of virus exposure.

The hospital will continue to work as usual, with no plans to transfer patients to other hospitals.

Russian Federation reported 10,899 new coronavirus cases today, continuing a steady increase of new infections that has seen the country become a global virus hotspot.

Investigators have also opened a criminal case into Tuesday's fire.

The All-Russia Institute for Medical Technology Research points out that there are many different types of medical ventilator, so a fault in one may not be common to others. Putin said Monday that only "a small fraction" of Russia's ventilator stockpile is now being used.

The incident occurred on the sixth flood of St. George Hospital in Russia's northern city of St. Petersburg. Moscow, which accounts for more than half the national total of cases, has already said lockdown measures will be in place until at least the end of May.

"In Moscow, many (hospitals) may follow the best Western standards, and in some regions little has changed since the 1990s or the late Soviet times", Alexander Baunov, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Moscow Center think-tank, wrote on Twitter on May 3.
