Brazil surpasses 10,000 coronavirus deaths

Brazil has registered more than 135,000 cases of the new coronavirus, with 9,146 deaths so far - by far the highest figures in Latin America.

"I'd like to be giving you different news", Governor Joao Doria announced.

The pandemic has killed nearly 283,000 people worldwide, with more than 4.1 million infections to date, while recoveries have topped 1.41 million, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University. "The only ones who can not see it are blinded by hate or personal ambition".

After stating that he lamented the deaths, Bolsonaro said that in response to the pandemic, Brazil must not waste resources that can be used to fight the coronavirus.

In asserting that his state's lockdown can be extended, Sao Paulo Governor Joao Doria mentioned Friday: "We are at the height of this pandemic".

Twitter says it will allow employees to work from home 'forever'
Opening offices will be our decision, when and if our employees come back, will be theirs. It's pajama trousers forever for Twitter employees-should they want that life.

The president wants Brazilians to get back to work.

Doria, a member of center-right party PSDB, has refused to be pressured, saying reopening too soon would cause a public health catastrophe.

While Brazil's numbers are excessive - 10,627 deaths and 155,939 confirmed instances - scientists assume the true figures could possibly be 15 and even 20 occasions worse, given the nation's incapacity to hold out widespread testing. Daily deaths beat the previous record of 615 on Wednesday.

Experts and some health authorities said the number is much higher, but it's not possible to know it due to the lack of tests.

Bolsonaro's decree, which also includes industrial activities and construction, may in the end have no practical effect: Brazil's Supreme Court ruled last month that governors and mayors have the final say in how they counter the spread of the coronavirus.
