How to properly wear a face mask to slow the spread of coronavirus

"Adding a layer of nylon stocking over the masks minimized the flow of air around the edges of the masks and improved particle filtration efficiency for all masks", the authors wrote in the study.

Some people opt to wear gloves when they're out and about going grocery shopping or hitting the pharmacy.

The use of nonmedical masks can reduce transmission of the virus by people who have it but aren't experiencing symptoms.

For this study, the researchers explored a few of these strategies to see which would work best for medical workers. Others are donating the profits from the sale of masks to COVID-19 relief funds or hospitals battling the outbreak.

It's been more than two months since the US confirmed its first case of the coronavirus, but there's still a lot of confusion over wearing cloth face masks in public.

Wearing a mask alone is never enough to protect a person from getting infected or spreading COVID-19. Numerous retailers selling these masks are matching each sale with a donation of a mask to a healthcare worker or food industry worker.

The health agency recommends that masks be made of at least two layers of fabric. Make sure your mask fits snugly and completely covers your mouth and nose.

This year's final supermoon is a flower moon
A supermoon happens when the moon's elliptical orbit brings it to the closest point to the Earth while the moon is full. The fifth full moon of 2020 was so named as it signifies spring and the flowers that bloom during the month of May.

Experts say no, but recommend carrying a cloth face mask in a paper bag or envelope in your pocket in case you need it. However, for the mask to be effective, it shouldn't lose its shape after washing and drying. Masks are most effective when worn consistently and properly in order to avoid contaminating the hands or face of the user.

Once it's on, do not touch or adjust it.

Health officials warn the wearer might infect themselves with the virus if their hands are often touching their face to adjust the mask.

The researchers found that the mask wouldn't hold up under the highest UV conditions necessary to kill germs, whereas one single trial of bleach and ethanol greatly reduced the protective quality of the mask. It is now unclear if these precautions will be taken by other travel companies, however, Mayor Andy Burnham recently revealed that he was considering making face masks mandatory for those using Manchester's Metrolink service.

Cloth masks should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. Healthcare workers are especially in need of masks, and because of an acute shortage, they are resorting to reusing these masks. If you're maintaining that distance, you should be okay to be outside without wearing a mask, DeLucia said.

"Hand hygiene whenever you are taking the mask on or off or even touching the mask is really critical to preventing you inoculating yourself with the virus", Dr. Kelly said.
