Two days later, US Vice President Mike Pence's press secretary also tested positive, setting off another round of tests, delaying the vice president's trip to Iowa and causing more hand-wringing inside the White House about who might be infected.

Ivanka Trump's personal assistant has tested positive for coronavirus, USA officials said on Saturday while confirming the third infection in the White House in less than a week.

During a roundtable on Friday, Donald Trump revealed that "Katie" in Pence's office had tested positive.

The US Defence Department released a statement in which they assured that the valet will quarantine at home and will receive medical care as needed.

"I've had very little contact with this person", Trump said of the valet on Thursday.

On April 3, the White House had said that anyone expected to be near Trump or Pence would be given a rapid COVID-19 test out of an abundance of caution.

Many mocked the President for previously suggesting unscientific cures for COVID-19 including disinfectants and bleach and claiming in February that coronavirus was a politicised hoax by Democrats.

Asked the reason his staff weren't wearing masks on Friday, Trump pointed to the one White House official in the room who was: the White House photographer.

More than 1,322,000 people in the USA had tested positive for the virus and at least 78,616 people had died as of early Saturday morning. The White House did not comment on whether he had been tested or if he was still working in the White House.

Valets are members of an elite military unit and often work very close to the president and the first family.

The test the White House uses, an Abbott Labs product which can produce results quickly, also has a 15% false negative rate, according to the head of the National Institutes of Health. The breach threw the executive mansion into a tizzy, with one account saying Trump was "lava-level mad" that someone so close to him had tested positive.

"She hasn't come into contact with me".

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Friday defended administration efforts to protect Mr Trump and Mr Pence, pointing to new measures taken by the White House including contact tracing and putting in place all guidelines recommended for essential workers. Critics say they are setting a bad example for Americans.

Recent studies have suggested that the coronavirus thrives especially well in enclosed, indoor workplaces where people sit next to each other, chat, and exchange air all day long.

Trump and Pence have both drawn sharp backlash for not following social protocols to wear masks when going out in public.

Moreover, the United States death toll is now over 76,000 with 1.32 million coronavirus cases reported so far.
