Look Up! A Cinco de Mayo Meteor Shower is On the Way

Eta Aquariid meteor shower

If you missed the Lid meteor shower in AprilThere is another chance to catch some "shooting stars" this week as the remains of a famous comet burn in the night sky.

According to Bill Cooke, who leads NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, the peak of the shower should happen in the hours before dawn on May 5th.

Eta Aquarid meteors appear once a year, usually active between April 19 and May 28, and can be spotted up to several days before and after the predicted peak.

Alas, Halley's comet itself won't be making an appearance, but the show will still be well worth it for astronomically inclined families.

The source of the Eta Aquariid meteor shower is Halley's Comet. They are essentially bits of debris which enter our planet's atmosphere, causing streaks of light.

It was last visible in 1986 and won't be visible from Earth again until 2061.

Halley is a well-known comet that can be viewed from Earth approximately every 76 years.

The improved air quality because of coronavirus lockdowns could also improve visibility for the meteor shower, The Weather Channel reported.

Restrictions lifting in Alberta on non-urgent scheduled surgeries
Hinshaw also stated that there are now 621 active cases at continuing care centres throughout the province. In an e-mail, Alberta Health spokesman Tom McMillan said hiring decisions are up to individual operators.

But if you're looking for a reason to go out, that's not a bad presentation for any meteor shower.

Astronomer Bruce McClure of EarthSky.org said: "This shower is known to be richer as seen from Earth's Southern Hemisphere than from the Northern Hemisphere".

Viewers should look due east to see the shooting stars, which will be coming up from the horizon and moving quickly across the night sky from their origin in the constellation Aquarius.

If you live in an urban area, you may want to drive to a place that isn't littered with city lights that will obstruct your view.

Sky-gazers can catch the best display between the hours of 2am or 3am.

"Bring a blanket or a comfortable chair with you-meteor watching can be a waiting game", the website says.

Rug up, set your alarm, and prepare to see perhaps the best sky appears over Australia this week.
