Fears resurfaced in 2013 when a PIA pilot, Irfan Faiz, was jailed in the United Kingdom after attempting to fly a jet with 156 passengers while three times over the legal alcohol limit.

Aviation experts have highlighted Pakistan's poor air safety record following the Pakistan International Airlines crash in Karachi that claimed the lives of more than 100 people.

Rescue teams and law enforcement are at the crash site and have started rescue operations.

An official at the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority said "probably a technical fault" was to blame for the crash.

Saqib Mukhtar, a member of the Pakistanis Toronto - GTA Facebook group, said he was receiving live updates from friends in Karachi."They are still struggling to take out bodies from plane", he said. It was not immediately clear if the casualties were passengers.

According to Geo News citing the Civil Aviation Authority, communications with the plane were lost one minute before landing.

PIA chief executive Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik said the pilot had told traffic control that the plane was experiencing "technical difficulties".

Friday's crash happened on the first day of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, when many Pakistanis return home to celebrate. Immediate inquiry will be instituted.
