NY to end stay-at-home order May 15

Total daily diagnoses, hospitalizations, intubations and coronavirus-related deaths are all down, with 161 people dying in the US's hardest-hit state on Sunday, according to Cuomo. Cuomo also renewed his call for Congress to pass funding for states, as their budgets get walloped by the pandemic: "Almost every state needs funding help".

"It's an exciting new phase". "We want to do it smartly, we want to do it intelligently, but we want to do it".

Cuomo said those areas had met seven metrics that will be used to determine when loosening restrictions is appropriate.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday sent an alert to governments and health officials across all other 49 U.S. states concerning a new and mysterious syndrome that appears to be associated with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infectious disease and causes severe illness and even death among young children.

Most of downstate New York also does not now meet the benchmarks, including New York City, which now meets only four of the seven requirements, and the mid-Hudson region, which was home to one of the state's first outbreaks in Westchester.

The Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, and Mohawk Valley regions - which include cities like Rochester, Binghamton, and Utica - have been given the green light after meeting criteria like a decline in coronavirus hospitalizations and having enough testing. And while businesses in parts of the state may begin reopening soon, schools will remain closed for the rest of the academic year.

Two Children Die From Severe Illness Linked To Coronavirus
So how is this illness linked to COVID-19 similar to the Kawasaki disease? "We're not so sure that that is the fact anymore". The health commissioner said that children above the age of 2 should wear face coverings outdoors.

Statewide, the governor also announced an easement on certain low-risk activities and businesses.

The reopening regions still need to work out logistics, such as creating regional "control rooms" to monitor the effects of the reopening. "If it does not go well, and you see that infection rate moving, you have to be able to pull the plug or slow down the increase in activity". "He applauded efforts to increase hospital capacity to meet projections, as well as lockdown measures that prevented" thousands" of deaths. He said this afternoon he believes the area already does and vowed Central New York will be ready on time.

Now that NY has made significant progress and changed the trajectory of the outbreak, Cuomo encouraged a continuation of the unity and intelligence that got the state to this point. "We are just about where we were when we started the journey".

"We just made it over the mountain".

"Talk about going back to the future", Cuomo said.
