Naomi Osaka: Japanese tennis star becomes world's highest-paid female athlete

- Osaka, 22, has become the world's highest-paid female athlete, making $37.4 million (34.3 million euros) in the past 12 months for an earnings record, Forbes magazine reported on May 22, 2020.

Despite only now ranking as the 10th best female tennis player in the world, Osaka's US Open and Australian Open wins in 2018 and 2019 catapulted her to stardom.

The 22-year-old amassed her staggering pre-tax total through a combination of prize money and endorsements, raking in $1.4 million more than Serena Williams over the last 12 months.

It wasn't just enough to edge Williams into second place, but also the biggest number dropped by a woman in history, shattering the single-year earning mark of $48.8 million set by Maria Sharapova in 2015.

"To those outside the tennis world, Osaka is a relatively fresh face with a great backstory", University of Southern California sports business professor David Carter told Forbes.

"Combine that with being youthful and bicultural - two attributes that help her resonate with younger, global audiences - and the result is the emergence of a global sports marketing icon".

Wuhan Bans on the Hunting, Breeding and Human Consumption of Wild Animals
Wuhan also imposed controls on the breeding of wild animals, making clear that from now on no wild animal can be reared as food. The announcement also included a total ban on wildlife trade, and provisions against the hunting of wild animals.

Tennis sensation Naomi Osaka has become the highest paid female athlete in history after earning $37.4 million over the previous year, according to Forbes.

Williams had led the way among women each of the past four years.

Osaka was a year old when Williams, who is now 38, won her first major title, and the newcomer only picked up her first Grand Slam trophy when she beat the American in the 2018 US Open final, causing the veteran to earn three code violations in a bad-tempered defeat.

Williams, a 23-time grand slam champion, has been the highest paid female athlete for the last four years - earning between $18 million to $29 million.

Osaka has been a popular endorsement figure in Japan in the build-up to the now-postponed Tokyo Olympics, securing lucrative deals with global brands Nike, Nissan and Yonex, among others.

Osaka's many fans are clued into her huge wealth, as the world No. 10 posted from a private jet earlier this month.
