Herd is probably best known to TV audiences for his role as Mr. Wilhelm on Seinfeld, George Costanza's New York Yankees boss who in one memorable episode is recruited by a religious cult (1996's "The Checks") and in another (1995's "The Hot Tub") is convinced George is cracking under the stress of the Big Leagues.

The character actor passed away this week at his home in Los Angeles as family was around him, a rep told The Wrap on Tuesday.

Herd had said in the past it was "easy" getting the part. And as I left, I turned around and said, 'Look, I have to tell you this.

He also appeared on several different "Star Trek" series, including "Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Renegades", and made his imprint on TV with one-off appearances on a wide range of classic shows, including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "The O.C." and "NYPD Blue".

Other TV shows Richard appeared in were TJ Hooker and Star Trek.

In addition to his wife Patricia, Herd is survived by his daughter Erica, his son Rick, and his stepdaughter Alicia.
