SpaceX selected to develop spacecraft for return to the moon

NASA today announced three companies - Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, Dynetics and Elon Musk's SpaceX - will continue developing their lunar landers created to bring astronauts to the Moon. The combined value of the awards is $967 million.

SpaceX said the "lunar optimized Starship" might bring a group from lunar orbit to the Moon's surface under NASA's Artemis program. "There are no more puzzle pieces to add". SpaceX is obviously much farther along in its journey toward a sustainable business model, while Blue Origin is still working out some of its kinks.

Also selected as a prime contractor is Washington-based Blue Origin, which will build the three-stage lander to be launched on its own New Glenn Rocket System and the Alabama-built ULA Vulcan rocket. Dynetics was awarded $253 million. The company will receive $579 million of the contract.

Musk's SpaceX, which is on the cusp of launching its first manned mission for NASA next month, will develop its Starship landing system to send crew and up to 100 pounds of cargo to the moon.

NASA said that Dynetics full lunar lander team consists of extra than 25 subcontractors. Bezos said Blue Origin might construct the lunar lander despite Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Draper have other goals.

The base period of the contract runs until February 2021 and during that time the space agency will decide which of the contractors will be asked to perform demonstration missions. "It's going to encompass deep design, development, long-lead procurements for each of the awardees". NASA plans to conduct a "continuation review" by the end of the 10-month studies, she said, "so we know, quickly, who we think has the best shot of making 2024".

China says it has no interest in meddling in U.S. elections
A little over a week ago, an irate Trump warned China of consequences if found responsible for the virus. Mr Trump is also seeking an accelerated timetable on development of a vaccine.

Boeing, a NASA contractor and one of the companies that bid for this contract, was not selected. "I fully believe that Elon Musk is going to be successful", said Bridenstine to Berger.

The company is developing the Dynetics Human Landing System, a single structure providing the ascent and descent capabilities that will launch on the ULA Vulcan launch system. In a new news release, NASA describes what each company will be doing to help make the goal of crewed missions to the Moon a reality once more.

Also during the press conference, Bridenstine said he had talked to politicians from both sides of the aisle and received broad, bipartisan support for the lunar effort.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from pad 39A with the seventh batch of SpaceX broadband network satellites, at the Kennedy Space Center, in Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S., April 22, 2020. In the past, Nasa has specified exactly how it wants spacecraft to be built. Bridenstine did note that, if Congress does take up a new stimulus spending package focused on infrastructure as part of its response to the pandemic, he hopes that NASA will be a part of that bill. Blue Origin originally debuted its vision of a human lander last year, first with the unveiling of its Blue Moon craft in May, and then with the announcement of its cross-industry "national team" at IAC later in the year.

This is four years earlier than Nasa's original plan, which called for the building of a lunar space station called the gateway.
