Just 7.3% of Stockholm's residents have developed coronavirus antibodies by April's end amid Sweden's bid for herd immunity, a new study reveals.

Business Insider reports the Nordic country has a soaring death rate, with numerous oldest, frailest people left vulnerable to catching the virus. A spokesman for the Public Health Authority said the results of other areas will be released later.

Data compiled by Our World in Data shows Sweden had the highest number of coronavirus deaths per capita in Europe over the last seven days, Reuters reports, calling the country's more relaxed pandemic strategy into question.

The study conducted by the Swedish Public Health Agency aims to determine the potential immunity of the flock in the population, based on 1,118 tests carried out in a week.

The strategy was criticized by Swedish researchers early on, who said that attempting to create herd immunity had low support.

However, Anders Tegnell, the country's head epidemiologist, told reporters that the findings reflected the situation in April and that he thought about 20% of people in Stockholm had now caught the coronavirus, The Guardian reported. But authorities denied that achieving herd immunity was their goal.

They have said that countries employing wholesale lockdowns to prevent any exposure to the coronavirus could face renewed outbreaks as restrictions were eased and be more susceptible to any second wave of the disease.

Dr Mike Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergency Program, said the concept of herd immunity was a "dangerous calculation". "So, I do think it is valuable information, but we should not fully rely on it". The Swedish government has a modest target of carrying out 100,000 a week, Reuters reported, and is focusing mainly on health care workers and people in hospital.

Over the course of the pandemic Sweden nonetheless has fewer deaths per capita than the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Belgium and France, which have all opted for lockdowns, however a lot larger than Nordic neighbours Denmark, Norway and Finland.

While others locked down to buy time, critics like Olsen say Sweden has done "too little, too late".

Sweden has overtaken the United Kingdom to have the flawless coronavirus dying price in step with capita on this planet, in line with new knowledge analysed through the Our International in Knowledge site.

This strategy "worked in some respects ... because our health system was able to afford it".
