Its main offices including the San Francisco headquarters won't begin to open until September, and the company says there will be additional precautions in place when workers do return.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told employees of the new open-ended work from home policy in an email Tuesday, as first reported by BuzzFeed News.

"When we do decide to open offices, it also won't be a snap back to the way it was before", the company said.

Even before the COVID-19 outbreak, Dorsey voiced plans to encourage a "distributed workforce" with more remote employees living outside San Francisco, where the company is headquartered.

Twitter was one of the first in the tech business to urge employees to work remotely when the coronavirus first emerged in the United States in mid March and says they will not reopen a majority of its offices before September.

A Twitter representative told Business Insider that the decision meshed with the company's broader mission to support employees working from anywhere, adding that "the past few months have proven we can make that work".

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on Tuesday told his workforce that they will be permitted to work from home forever, with the exception of those jobs that can't be done remotely, like server maintenance.

The spokesperson noted that most Twitter offices will stay closed until September, and business travel will also be suspended until September "with very few exceptions". It will be careful, intentional, office by office and gradual. All in-person events are canceled for the rest of the year, and it will revisit whether to have any 2021 events later this year.

'We've been very thoughtful in how we've approached this from the time we were one of the first companies to move to a work-from-home model. Managers who didn't think they could manage teams that were remote will have a different perspective. It is also giving employees increased allowances to buy home office supplies including desks and desk chairs. Other major tech firms, including Facebook and Google, have extended their work from home policies through the end of the year.
