UF reveals plan for student-athletes to resume athletic activities

The Southeastern Conference announced voluntary in-person athletics activities may resume on SEC campuses, at the discretion of each university, beginning June 8.

They referred to June 8 as the start of "transition period that will allow student-athletes to gradually adapt to full training and sports activity after this recent period of inactivity".

Certain activities will be permitted on the ability to participate in controlled and safe environments, under plans developed by each university, while maintaining social distancing guidelines. "We will continue to be considerate of these differences with wise and flexible administration of our regulations, and we expect schools to keep the well-being of student-athletes as a priority".

"While each institution will make its own decisions in creating defined plans to safely return student-athletes to activity, it is essential to employ a collaborative approach that involves input from public health officials, coaches, sports medicine staff, sports performance personnel and student-athletes", Sankey said. Abbott has already issued new rules to allow youth sports leagues to resume in June and for some professional leagues to hold events without spectators. "At this time, we are preparing to begin the fall sports season as now scheduled, and this limited resumption of voluntary athletic activities on June 8 is an important initial step in that process". "Elements of the Task Force recommendations provided key guidance for determining the date of the return to activity". Earlier this week, the association voted to allow voluntary activities in football as well as men's and women's basketball.

"The return of voluntary activity in addition to the extension of the waiver to allow virtual, nonphysical activity shows sensitivity to local, state and regional differences in how Division I campuses are reopening", Pennsylvania athletic director M. Grace Calhoun said in a statement.

As part of its decision on Friday, the SEC revealed the protocols its schools must abide by when bringing football players back to campus. All in-person camps and clinics remain suspended through July 31. In the coming days, we'll execute procedures enabling student-athletes to return, with members of our football program being the first to arrive.
