UK Home Secretary Priti Patel announces the new rules

The government is expected to announce that all global arrivals, including returning Britons, will be required to self-isolate for 14 days and provide details of where they will be staying to the authorities. A breach of self-isolation would be punishable with a £1,000 fixed penalty notice in England, though in some cases it could involve potential prosecution and an unlimited fine.

All worldwide arrivals, including returning Britons, will have to self-isolate for 14 days and provide details of where they will be staying under the plans, which were criticised by airlines, business groups and politicians alike.

Certain workers, such as medical staff, road haulage and freight workers, will be exempt, as will people travelling into the United Kingdom from Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

Britons returning from overseas will also have to self-isolate for 14 days under the measures, which will be reviewed every three weeks.

Paul Lincoln, Director General Border Force, said elite sports including Formula One were not exempt but the Government was keeping it under review "to see if there is a way in which sports events can be done safely with right measures in place".

As part of the plans, which are aimed at guarding against a second wave of coronavirus infections, all arrivals would be asked to fill in a form with their contact information. "Therefore, we are calling for a multi-layered approach of carefully targeted public health and screening measures, which will allow for a successful and safe restart of worldwide air travel for passengers and businesses". They may also leave it in "an emergency", a spokeswoman added.
