Deere argued the White House is not muzzling or blocking Fauci, but rather trying to ensure lawmakers able balance the need for oversight with their responsibility to handle COVID-19 work.

The House Appropriations Committee's subcommittee on the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies sought to have Fauci appear at its Wednesday hearing.

The White House has blocked Dr Anthony Fauci, a senior health official on the Coronavirus Task Force, from testifying on the Trump administration's response to the pandemic, House Appropriations Committee spokesperson Evan Hollander said in a statement.

The White House said Fauci is busy dealing with the pandemic and will appear before Congress later.

The Washington Post first reported Dr Fauci would not testify.

Fauci is a key member in the White House task force that coordinates the government-wide response to the outbreak of the CCP virus. But if we do that, we'll have to get something for it, ' Trump said Thursday. Moving forward, he added the administration is "committed to working with Congress to offer testimony, just only at appropriate times".

In recent days, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have urged investigations into the Trump administration's response to the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, a novel coronavirus that emerged from China.

Appropriations Chair Rep. Nita Lowey of NY and subcommittee chair Rosa DeLauro of CT issued a statement that said the nation deserved a "clear-eyed view" of the way forward but stopped short of bashing the White House for the decision.

They will instead hear from Dr. Tom Frieden, former Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the Obama administration. That number has ballooned to over 1 million cases and at least 64,000 deaths as of May 1.

"The people of this country deserve a federal government that is up-to-date, modernized, and prepared to protect lives", the two representatives wrote.
