Will Richmond churches reopen this weekend?



Most governors have chosen to close houses of worship out of concern they would be a hotbed of virus activity with people placed in-doors in close proximity.

Houses of worship around the country on Friday got a presidential green light to open immediately. "The people are demanding to go to church and synagogue, go to their mosque", he said.

Religious events helped spread the virus early in the pandemic, and resuming gatherings of the faithful is an especially thorny issue.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel wrote a letter to the White House requesting for Trump to wear a mask during his visit to the Ford plant in accordance with a recent state wide order. "We've got to get our churches open".

"They [Ford] knew exactly what the order was and if they permitted anyone, even the president of the United States, to defy that order, I think it has serious health consequences potentially to their workers".

The country has been locked down for almost two months, with almost 20,000 people being diagnosed with the virus to date. Authorities in nearby Hanau called off Muslim prayers planned for a stadium Sunday as a precaution.

It's unclear to some state leaders what power Trump possesses to force them to allow churches to reopen.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said if gatherings go over 10, city agencies including the NYPD will ask people to move and issue summonses if they don't move or disperse.

According to the White House readout of the meeting, Trump said the right of church congregations to hold services was part of America's "transition to greatness".

An evangelical pastor who's been a key Trump backer, Jack Graham, plans to reopen his Texas megachurch on Pentecost weekend.

When President Trump joined the call, he doubled down on Barr's comments. "With pastors, church leaders, and church members adhering to proper social distancing practices, our churches should be permitted to open as soon as possible while doing so in a safe and responsible manner".

'Please, as you go out this weekend, understand that you can be outside and you can play golf, and you can play tennis with marked balls, ' she said.
