Starbucks barista receives $57,000 in donations after 'Karen' shames him

'Meet Lenen from Starbucks who refused to serve me cause I'm not wearing a mask, ' she said in the post, tagging the cafe off the 4200 block of Genesee Avenue.

Amber Lynn Gilles made a Facebook post about her experience at a Starbuck's in San Diego's Clairemont Mesa neighborhood yesterday at 10:38am and it now has has 71,000 likes, 96,000 comments and more than 33,000 shares.

Most of the comments were pointing out how stupid her reaction was against the Starbucks barista.

The Washington Post noted than numerous Facebook users defended the barista, Lenin Gutierrez.

So, a man named Matt Cowan started a virtual tip jar for the barista on GoFundMe for Gutierrez.

Matt Cowan, of Irvine, mentioned he began the net effort after seeing feedback in assist of Gutierrez after his encounter with Amber Lynn Gilles at a Starbucks on Genesee Avenue in San Diego.

So he chose to start a GoFundMe, which he named "Tips for Lenin Standing Up To A San Diego Karen", to give everyone who wanted to tip Gutierrez a chance to do so virtually. "And when we hit $100 I was overwhelmed by that", Cowan said.

"Everybody is rallying around somebody for doing what they're supposed to do and trying to protect everyone else", he added.

Gutierrez has since released a video on to social media in which he thanked people for "all the love and support".

The GoFundMe set up for Gutierrez was created June 22 and had raised $20,389 within three days, surpassing its initial $20,000 goal.

"It's been so helpful and so shocking to see something get so big that only happened within a few minutes", he said, before detailing his version of the events that took place on the day in question.

"When I realized who he was, I just thought, 'Wow, it really surprised me on Facebook, '" Gutierrez told CNN.

Gutierrez asked her if she had a visual mask - but before she was even able to show her company guide requiring customers to wear one, the woman abandoned her and "started cursing a storm", she said.

As of May 1, San Diego County has required residents to wear face coverings in most public settings, including when picking up food at a restaurant. However, the notice does state that those with a health condition that prevents them from wearing a mask are exempt. "We respectfully request customers follow social distancing and safety protocols recommended by public health officials, including wearing a facial covering when visiting our stores", a Starbucks spokesperson told Delish: "More information on what customers can expect in our stores can be found on our At a Glance page". Gilles said she is an anti-vaxxer and believes masks are ineffective.

On Fb, Lenin Gutierrez explained he now has big strategies for his unforeseen tips.

"With this donation that all people furnished me on GoFundMe, I can make these desires a fact", he stated.

Lenin Gutierrez said he would use the money to help him achieve his dream of being a dancer and he would also contribute to organisations in the San Diego community.
